Natural Treatments for Cataracts

According to the World Health Organization, cataracts are the cause of 48 percent of blindness the world over. This condition consists on a clouding and eventual opacity of the cornea, preventing light from getting into the eye. The lense of the eye hardens and dries out, as well. They appear to be more common in people whose eyes are exposed to a lot of extra ultraviolet radiation, such as airline pilots, and are most common in people age 50 and over. However, some forms of cataracts are not age-related; babies can be born with them.
Cataracts can be treated by surgery, but it requires use of drugs you may not want to take, and if anything goes wrong you could leave your surgery blind in that eye. Cataract surgery consists of removing the cloudy lense from the “capsule” inside in the eye that contains it. A more severe and less often performed cataract treatment is to remove the lense and the capsule entirely. In either case, the lense is replaced with a plastic one that will stay in the eye. Cataract surgery can cost up to $4,500 for a single eye.
It is believed by some that stress contributes to the development of cataracts, so one natural way to prevent them is to relax more. Taking vitamin supplements, particularly A, B, C, D and E, is also believed to lessen symptoms of existing cataracts. These seem like small things, though, when compared to the amazing results people have had by using eyedrops containing the super-antioxident N-Acetyl-Carnosine. NAC, as it’s called for short, has a success rate of 40 to 100 percent in improving cataracts of patients who trial tested it. Improvement can be seen in as little as three months.
Trial patients’ cataracts showed the same level of improvement a year and a half after the treatments. NAC eyedrops have been sold for years in Europe and the United Kingdom; they are available in American stores, but marketed as a “sore eye relief” eyedrop due to lack of FDA approval as a treatment for cataracts. Look for N-Acetyl-Carnosine in the ingredients list.
