Eyecare Fundamentals

There’s that old saying about not knowing what you have until it’s gone, and sometimes that turns out to be true when it comes to people’s general health, and eye health, too. Many people don’t think about prevention until they already have a problem that needs to be treated. Alternative medicine believes that prevention is the best medicine, and that avoiding the problem is better than having all the technology in the world to fix something that’s breaking.
Eye health is something many people take for granted in that same way. Have you ever thought about what life would be like if you couldn’t see, or even if your vision was severely impaired? Simply running errands or reading a book would be more complicated, and would probably require assistance. But with some basic eyecare tips, you can be sure to take proper care of your eyes and ensure that your vision stays healthy for many years to come.
Protecting your eyes from the sun is the number one basic eyecare tip that is so easy to forget about, but is so essential to making the most of the eyes you’ve got. Sun damages not only the skin, but the eyes as well. And just like you’re supposed to wear sunscreen even on cloudy days, sunglasses should be worn any time you are outside during daylight hours, even on days that aren’t sunny. UV rays filter through clouds and can harm your eyes even if you can’t see the sun directly, so be sure your sunglasses have UV protection. Be wary of sunglasses that are only tinted shades and don’t really protect your eyes.
Other fundamental eyecare tips are to take breaks when you are watching TV or working at the computer. Be sure to rest your eyes, close them for a few minutes at a time, or look somewhere other than the screen. Get proper nutrients, like plenty of vitamins C and A, and get regular check-ups with an eye doctor. Your vision is only as good as your eyes, so protect them with these easy steps.
