There are a variety of eye conditions that can be treated yourself. However, there are several severe conditions that require doctor attention. Some of these include trauma, chemical exposure, corneal swelling, and others.

Trauma to the eye requires a doctor’s attention immediately. If they are able to examine your eye they can identify if there is bleeding within the eye, or a detachment of the retina. These are both severe as they can cause impaired vision.

Exposure to chemicals requires immediate attention. For example, if a household cleaning solution splashes in your eye, you should seek physician attention right away. You can initially treat it with water. Chemical exposure is serious, as it can cause temporary blindness.

Corneal swelling is caused by fluid in the cornea. This may cause blurred vision. Corneal swelling may be caused by a complication of contact lenses, an inherited defect, or surgical damage to the cornea. This can be treated by hyperosmotic drops or ointment but may require additional attention.

Keratitis is a condition that is usually caused by conjunctivitis. It is also seen by itself, without having conjunctivitis. Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea. The symptoms may include blurred vision, pain, and sensitivity to light.

Abrasion also requires a doctor’s attention. This occurs when something such as a fingernail scratches the eye, resulting in a piece of the first layer of the eye being scratched off. This increases your change of infection.

Uveitis is and inflammation of the iris and structures connected to the iris. This may be caused by trauma or inflammation of other parts of the body. The symptoms include pain, tearing, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light.

These are several common conditions that require doctor attention. There are, of course, many more. Because symptoms are so similar you should consult a doctor to determine which condition you have. If the condition is severe enough to cause blurred vision, you should see your doctor.
