What’s a poor-sighted person’s worst nightmare? Breaking a pair of glasses. If you haven’t been glasses shopping lately, brace yourself to empty your bank account: glasses are expensive. With all the options available (designer frames, light-changing lenses, wire or plastic frames, and enough colors to fill a Crayola crayon box), it’s no wonder people would rather glue their glasses together than go shopping for a new pair.

So where should you buy your glasses? Where can you walk out with a pair of quality frames for a price that won’t break the bank? Which places will still give you expert staff, quality fittings, and tons of selection? Here are the best places to buy your next pair of frames. Happy shopping!

The Best Place to Buy Your Glasses: Costco Optical

According to Consumer Reports, the top place to get your next pair of glasses is Costco Optical, where the average cost of a pair of glasses ran around $157. Your next best bet if you want to shop local (or you don’t have a Costco membership) is an independent glasses shop around town, where consumers paid around $211 a pair. No local eyeglass shops around? Head to a private doctor’s office. A pair from your local private doctor will set you back about $212.

The Worst: JCPenney

Don’t go to JCPenney, America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses, Visionworks, Eyemasters, or Pearle Vision, cautions Consumer Reports. These five companies had the five worst rankings of all glasses providers.

Hence, we should thank god that we have been given the perfect pair of eyes which we should take care regularly.

While we take the trouble of checking our heart, lungs, kidney, liver and other important organs of the body, we sometimes neglect our eyes. This is very wrong and it could lead to some serious problems at a later stage in life. Hence, it is always better to have your eyes checked up by a good eye-specialist at least once in 6 months. Image via Wikipedia

Cataract is an eye disease in which the clouding of lens happens. Cataract is found mainly in the people of old age. Cataract is a symptom of ageing. Our eye fluid is made up on water and protein. With the age the protein starts building up which leads to the formation of cloud in our eye lenses. This results in blurring of image and not seeing clearly. The other causes related to formation of cataract are diabetes and smoking cigarettes. It is found in common cases that cataract develops in both the eyes when detected. There are many treatments of cataract but the best known till now is operation. Some years back the operation for cataract was a long and painful procedure where the patient had to go under major anesthesia. But nowadays the operation is done by using Laser beam and the patient can be relieved within a day and he can continue his normal work. Also the patient does not go under the major anesthesia. After the operation the patient must wear dark glasses to save his eyes from the harmful Ultraviolet rays of the Sun. Besides operation there is no treatment available for cataract. Homeopathic medicines may keep it at a stable stage but later the patient has to go under operation to get rid of cataract.

Cataract is commonly found in people who are illiterate or below the poverty line. Due to the lack of knowledge people are not aware of this eye disease and they easily fall prey to it. In the operation of cataract the old lenses of eyes are removed and they are placed by the new ones. After this the patient starts seeing the things clearly. Even after the operation the patient has to be very careful about his eyes. He should not be exposed to the direct sunlight. The patient has to be very careful about his diet and spicy food is totally prohibited after the operation. Cataract is one of the major causes of blindness in under developed countries, due to the lack of knowledge and information.

Ways to Correct Vision

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

People need to correct their vision for several reasons. It could an inherited situation, medically induced or it may be due to an injury. Going to an eye doctor or Ophthalmologist the patient will learn about ways to correct their vision as well as if they have an issue.

It is a time to discuss concerns and mention any symptoms that the patient is experiencing. It is also a time for an eye doctor to detect an issue that the patient may not even realize is occurring. Eye doctors can determine if a person is farsighted or nearsighted, which are considered to be the most common reasons for vision correction and are inherited conditions. Nearsightedness is known to be the more severe of the two conditions and will be monitored closely if it is an extreme case.

There are three ways used by an eye doctor to correct vision:

  • Eye Glasses
  • Contact Lenses
  • Surgery

The eye doctor tests a patient’s vision by having them read an eye chart. The eye doctor places a phoropter that has many different lenses of various strengths on one of the patient’s eyes during testing. Then they switch and test the other eye. This is how eye doctors determine if a person needs vision correction and what strength the correction needs to be.

An eye doctor can even recommend what ways to correct vision for the individual. Sometimes the patient has a choice and other times the patient is found to not be a candidate for an option, such as corrective surgery.

Proper eye care helps prevent eye issues as well as keeping eyes healthy. Going to the doctor regularly can help reduce vision issues because the doctor can catch things early. That leads to whatever the issue to be treated quickly and reduces the risk of further damage.

General Eye Care Health important for proper vision

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

Most won’t deny that eyes are important. Once eyesight is lost it is gone. Sure it can be corrected with glasses and contacts or with corrective eye surgery, but that’s it. Basically, eyesight can be improved with help from an eye doctor using general eye care practices being important for proper vision.

Eating a proper diet of beta carotene and vitamin A enriched foods is a way to maintain healthy eye sight. These foods include spinach, mangoes, apricots and carrots. Resting eyes is also important such as closing eyes during the day for a minute or so, especially if using the computer.

Visiting an eye doctor regularly is a major importance to help with proper eye care. These visits are a time for:

  • Eye Tests

The doctor will do a variety of tests that look for proper vision as well as determining any eye abnormalities. Such conditions they test for are glaucoma, macular degeneration and astigmatism. If a problem is detected then doctors will determine how to treat the patient.

  • Glasses and Contact Lenses

If a person’s eyes have lost a degree of their vision the doctor will find the right glasses or contact lenses for their patient. This includes the right lenses to wear to correct the patient’s vision while wearing their corrective wear. The eye doctor will know if contact lenses or glasses are the right choice. They could also talk with the patient about corrective eye surgery that is done to help patients recover vision to such degrees they may no longer need corrective eye wear.

  • Eye Safety

Not all eye issues are inherited or even medically involved. Eye safety is another concern. Eye doctors not only treat environmental eye conditions and injuries, such as involving sports, but they help teach how to prevent these issues.

Often if an eye condition is detected early it can be treated without further or any damage to the eye.
